Prefer Only a Treatment or a Cure for Your Cancer?

Treatment Vs Cure for Cancer

Every time I either hear in the news or read about cancer, I shudder at the staggering number of needless lives that cancer claims annually. Last year, 2021, it was estimated that 1.9 million cancer cases would be diagnosed in the US alone, of which 608, 570 cancer deaths would occur. (Cancer.org)

More Bleak Cancer Statistics

I am going to break down the huge 608,570 figure into percentages to capture cancer's destructive effect in a more "manageable way."

In men, the top 5 leading causes of cancer-related deaths in 2021 were predicted to be the following:

  • Lung and bronchus: 22%
  • Prostate: 11%
  • Colon and rectum: 9%
  • Pancreas: 8%
  • Liver and intrahepatic bile duct: 6%

In women, the top 5 leading causes of cancer-related deaths in 2021 were predicted to be the following:

  • Lung and bronchus: 22%
  • Breast: 15%
  • Colon and rectum: 8%
  • Pancreas: 8%
  • Ovary: 5%

Interpreting the Data

First, what are the most common cancer treatments used by Americans? They consist of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (Medicineplus.gov).

Since the vast majority of Americans are turning mostly to the above cancer treatments, and still 608,570 cancer patients have died or are likely to die, we can deduce that these main and most-trusted cancer treatments are failing to rescue one-third of cancer patients. So, the question is begged: is there anything better that can save more lives from cancer?

Do You Prefer a Treatment or a Cure for Cancer?

Naturally, anyone diagnosed with terminal lung cancer would immediately choose a cure since by now all possible treatments have been exhausted and obviously have not worked.

Countless medications, radiation, and all such therapies and treatments can only do so much like delay the inevitable. But wouldn't you rather cure your cancer?

Review of Top 10 Popular Weight Loss Supplements

Taking these Weight Loss Supplements?

Amazon warns customers: Those supplements might be fake

When you decide to begin losing weight, it can be extremely tempting to search for some support. If your thoughts race to popular weight loss supplements, bear in mind that past research studies from different sources give several of them varying reviews. In certain cases, there exists a serious lack of hard science to support the claims, and others have a range of health risks.

In addition, you must know the FDA has been cracking down on such weight loss supplements which conceal the fact that they contain drugs without being mentioned on the label.

Since the FDA does not regulate supplements in the same way as drugs are, it doesn't review them for either efficacy or safety before they start selling to the general public.

Review of Top 10 Popular Weight Loss Supplements

Let's see how these most popular supplements do under my scrutiny.

1.  Chitosan

What in the world is Chitosan? This is simply a sugar that originates from the outer hard layers of shrimp, crabs, and lobsters. Fans claim it could prevent your body from absorbing cholesterol and fats.

Does chitosan assist you lose weight? Natural Medicines, which is an independent group that examines research on supplements, states there exist not enough reliable proof to rate it. Another organization, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), says that chitosan has failed to demonstrate any effectiveness for weight loss.

Although chitosan typically causes zero side effects, some people do experience constipation or upset stomach. If you happen to be allergic to shellfish, you are advised not to take chitosan, since it's made from shellfish.

2.  Chromium

Chromium is a mineral which improves insulin, a hormone vital for converting food into energy. Your body in addition requires chromium to store proteins, carbs, and fats.

Some companies claim that chromium supplements do the following:

  • reduce your body fat
  • help you burn additional calories
  • curb your appetite
  • increase your muscle mass
However, a formal overview of 24 studies which analyzed the effects of 200 to as high as 1,000 micrograms of chromium daily discovered that there were no important benefits. Natural Medicines states that chromium is "possibly ineffective" for general weight loss.

3.  Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

This is a supplement that has chemicals often found in a fatty acid known as linoleic acid. Some health companies claim their CLA supplements can help in curbing body fat and making you feel full.

But the current research on CLA for weight loss isn't absolutely clear but mixed. For example, some researchers indicate that for certain people, 1.8 to 6.8 grams of CLA daily might increase muscle and curb body fat.

Another research study demonstrates it does not help you lose weight.

Natural Medicines states that CLA is potentially effective for weight loss.

Some scientists warn that prolonged use, particularly if you're obese, might raise insulin resistance, which in turn increases your chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Also, it may reduce good cholesterol in your blood, which boosts the danger of heart issues arising.

4.  Glucomannan

This comes from the konjac plant and like many dietary fibers, it's believed to assist you lose weight by preventing fat in your food from getting absorbed by your body.

Although rather early research suggests it may be helpful, other evidence demonstrates it doesn't work at all.

Natural Medicines states there exists not enough evidence to rate whether or not glucomannan works for weight loss.

5.  Green Tea Extract

This supposed to work by suppressing your appetite and increasing calorie and fat metabolism.

Natural Medicines states there exists not enough evidence to provide a rating of how well it really works.

Side effects, particularly in high quantities, include agitation, nausea, insomnia, vomiting, dizziness, bloating, diarrhea, and gas.

6.  Green Coffee Extract

Early research studies indicate it might result in modest weight loss. Natural Medicines says that there doesn't exist sufficient solid research to determine whether it's effective.

Although only a few people experience side effects, the caffeine in green coffee it can cause the following:

  • insomnia
  • headaches
  • nervousness
  • abnormal heart rhythms
  • upset stomach

7.  Guar Gum

Guar gum originates from the seed of the guar plant and like several dietary fibers, it might block fats from getting absorbed by your body and help you in feeling full.

With all the research that has been done on guar gum, much more than on other fibers for weight loss, the majority of researchers state it's ineffective.

Natural Medicines concurs and rates guar gum as potentially ineffective.

8.  Hoodia

Hoodia is a plant which grows in Africa's Kalahari Desert.  According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the Bushmen traditionally used the stem of the root to reduce their hunger and thirst while hunting. It's today promoted as an appetite suppressant. Although hoodia has P57, an ingredient that's supposed to curb one's appetite by making you feel fuller, there's no hard evidence to suggest it's either effective or safe. Natural Medicine states hoodia lacks evidence to give a rating whether it works.

9.  7-Keto-DHEA

This substance is something natural in your body that might assist you in losing weight by raising your metabolic level so you can then burn additional calories during the day.

In a few small studies, participants who took the supplement together with a minimized calorie diet and moderate exercise regimen, saw significant weight loss as compared to those given a placebo only.

However, Natural Medicines states there still exists not enough trustworthy proof to rate how well it works.

10.  Ephedra

Also called ma huang, ephedra is an herb and a different plant from a related species which grows in North America. It has the stimulant ephedrine.

Moreover, ephedra is quite closely related to the man-made compounds found in drugs like phenylpropanolamine and pseudoephedrine.

The FDA ended up banning all supplements with ephedra after it was connected to harmful side effects like stroke, heart attack, death, arrhythmia, seizures, and psychosis.

However, the FDA's ban does not apply to traditional Chinese herbal products or remedies like herbal teas.

The FDA says that there's too little proof that this herb actually helps but only for brief weight loss.

Natural Medicines states ephedra is potentially unsafe.

Keto Weight Loss: 10 Major Roadblocks & 10 Fixes

Keto Weight Loss Problems?

keto diet

The keto weight loss is a sort of diet which largely limits carbo intake. Normally, your body does the heavy lifting of breaking down carbohydrates into sugar glucose, of which then is used for energy. But if there happens to be a lack of carbs in your body, it shifts into a phase known as ketosis.

This is the ideal state, for your body suddenly grows quite efficient at burning excess fat and utilizing it rather than glucose for energy. This fat burning approach has made the keto diet popular for everyone wanting to lose weight.

However, some individuals might learn that they do not lose any weight while on the ketogenic diet. In the majority of the cases, this can result on account of they not going into ketosis.

There are other less clear reasons why anyone might not experience weight loss when following this diet. In this blog post, I'll highlight the various possibilities and offer practical fixes to help you reach your weight loss objective.

Keto Weight Loss: 10 Major Roadblocks & 10 Fixes

1.  Failing to achieve ketosis

Typically. when anyone is failing to lose weight while on the ketogenic diet, it's due to not achieving ketosis.

The most common cause that some people do not go into the state of ketosis is forgetting to reduce on the amount of carbs. According to an article on the keto diet, carbohydrates should not exceed 10% of an individual's calorie consumption.

More specifically, many keto diets require you to limit between 20 and 50 grams of carbohydrates daily.

At times, you might feel as if you have already hugely cut down on your carb intake. But, in reality, you might yet be consuming enough carbs for your body to make energy from glucose, which in turn will hinder the body from effectively burning fat.

Anyone who isn't losing weight while on the ketogenic diet might benefit from buying a home testing kit. Such kits provide test strips which check for the existence of ketones in your urine. A positive outcome is a good indication that your body is now in ketosis.

Another option: use a little machine known as a ketone breath analyzer which locates ketones in your breath.

Home testing could be a great way for anyone to make sure that they in fact are achieving ketosis. You can utilize this critical information to adjust your diet to help you reach that weight loss goal.

2.  Consuming too much protein

Several low carb diets permit a modest amount of protein. Some individuals assume that a low carb and high protein diet is a ketogenic diet. But this kind of diet is not likely to help result in ketosis since the body could break down extra proteins into amino acids and then turn them to kinds of sugar.

Anyone who's on the ketogenic diet will get the majority of calories from fat, which ought to represent around 55 to 60% of calorie intake. This fat intake provides little space for protein. If protein comprises over 35% of your diet, it's most unlikely you'll go into ketosis.

3.  Consuming excess acceptable carbs

On the ketogenic diet, many kinds of carbohydrate are acceptable like dairy and nuts. Since these foods are generally high fat and nutrient dense foods, they make a fine addition to your keto diet. But they have carbs, too.

And eating too much of such foods will prevent you from reaching and maintaining ketosis.

4.  Eating maltitol

Sugar alcohols are usually a fine option for those following the keto diet.  Although they provide sweetness without boosting net carbs in your body, not all sugar alcohols are the same.

Maltitol happens to be a sugar alcohol that's not keto-friendly. Despite maltitol being a low glycemic index sugar, it yet impacts blood sugar levels. And this effect is sufficient to hinder an individual from experiencing ketosis.

5.  Not counting calories

Anyone who consumes more calories than his body could burn is rather less likely to see weight loss. In fact, people who commonly consume excessive calories might put on weight, though they are already in ketosis.

High fat foods usually contain several additional calories than foods which are high in proteins and carbs. It's thus, vital that you monitor the number of calories which you eat daily.

Following a balanced diet plan could help you work toward achieving your target weight.

6.  Habit of snacking

Although an individual has a great meal plan to initiate, if he can't quit the habit of snacking constantly, this could largely boost the calorie intake. A snack might help stop hunger pangs, but it also could quickly harm the weight loss outcome.

7.  Drinking alcohol

Several alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine are high in carbs. The majority types of ketogenic diet don't permit these kinds of alcohol.

Hard alcohols, like vodka and gin, contain less carbohydrates, which means they are typically acceptable on a ketogenic diet. However, these drinks tend to be quite calorie dense and as such these options could prevent weight loss.

Either reduce or eliminate your intake of alcohol, for it too easily increases calorie intake and provides no nutrients to your body.

8.  Some or no exercise

Exercise is a significant factor in helping you to stay healthy. Also, exercise stimulates your body's metabolism as well as burn calories. Thus, it's a remarkable tool for dieters.

Exercise could play an even more important role while on a keto diet, for the high fat foods which anyone consumes contain several calories. Burning calories via exercise could help you get to your desired weight.

9.  High stress

A lifestyle full of high stress also could prevent anyone from shedding weight on the ketogenic diet. According to a 2012 study, stress could bring about changes in hormone levels, which in turn could result in either problems losing weight or weight gain.

Chronic stress might in addition cause a person to desire comfort foods, which only add more calories to the current diet.

10.  Underlying medical conditions

At times, anyone might be doing everything correctly and yet not succeed in losing weight while on the keto diet. In certain cases, this might be happening because of an underlying condition which is causing weight gain or hindering weight loss. Or a medicine that another person is currently taking to treat the underlying condition might turn out to be causing greater appetite as a negative side effect.

Conditions which could lead to weight gain range from polycystic ovary syndrome, high insulin levels, hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome to depression.

You are advised to see your doctor if unable to experience weight loss while following a strict keto diet and exercise plan. Your doctor might order tests to figure out what is hindering weight loss. By addressing the underlying condition might resolve the issue.

Celine Dion's Weight Loss: Genetics or Environment?

Explain Celine Dion's Weight Loss

DNA double helix.

After losing her husband to cancer in 2016, Celine Dion has been gradually losing weight and some fans are concerned.  Frankly, the Canadian singer has never really been slim, so cause for worry is understandable.

Hello Magazine tells the public that after the pop star canceled her Las Vegas residency in 2021 and then her North American touring dates saw postponement in early 2022, Celine shared a touching video message that shows her quite healthy to counteract rumors of experiencing bad health. She conveyed that she wished everyone today was "staying safe in these difficult times," in reference to the notorious coronavirus. Moreover, she told the public her regret for being incapable of carrying out the 2022 performance and her desire that her fans do not despair since she and her team members "feel really good about doing the shows in 2023."

From a new regimen of exercise to rumors regarding her current diet to Celine's genuine theories that explain why she's thinner, here is the gospel's truth behind Celine Dion's weight loss.

Celine Dion's Weight Loss: Genetics or Environment?

The pop star's weight loss might be occurring because of genetics.

The weight loss of Celine Dion has been inspiring conversations for a number of years. However, it was not till she started to lose additional pounds in later years that her current physique started to make headlines once again. According to another source, The Guardian, Celine attributes her thin body partly to genetics, elaborating, "I have been thin all my life. Nobody in my family is overweight."

According to Harvard, although genetics is certainly a factor in weight with genes amounting to only 25% of the inclination to become overweight, some individuals might be genetically influenced by a higher percentage like 70% to 80%. For example, you have a greater chance to being obese, such as up to 80%, if mom and dad are obese. So, perhaps Celine is right with her thin-body theory; she just might have inherited the thin gene from her parents.

Celine had to counter rumors regarding her weight loss. It's not unusual for people to wonder, guess, and then spread unsupported rumors that a certain star has some sort of an eating disorder; Celine Dion has not been spared this kind of awfulness. According to one of The Guardian's articles, when the rumors claiming she was anorexic came up, Celine grew annoyed and flatly denied she was coping with an eating disorder. She countered: "I'm not anorexic." In reality, she appears to truly love food.

According to Celine's tour driver for previous tours through The Smoking Gun, the pop star needed potato chips, diet Coke, bottled water, and fruit inside her dressing room. In addition, Celine has been photographed consuming hot dogs. Moreover, according to the Hollywood Reporter in a 2017 interview, the pop star does not even indulge in smoothies for breakfast. When questioned about her usual breakfast, she answered: "I have to have my coffee every morning--regular and a croissant."

Celine elaborated her theory for the reason rumors that she's dealing with an eating disorder won't stop circulating, saying, "It pisses people off that I am thin and I don't make any effort."

The pop star attributes her current weight to stressful tendencies and her astrological sign.

Celine might grow irritated when people automatically assume she does not eat on account of her adamancy that her slim physique is genetic. But this is not the only trait she's crediting for her present size. She communicated to Rachael Ray in the 2002s, "They think I'm starving myself, that I don't eat, that I exercise all the time. It's not true."  She continued to explain that her siblings and father are all thin, too. Celine attributed her natural ability for burning calories to her astrological sign. "I'm Aries, and I'm a very nervous person; I'm very energetic. You lose a lot of calories."

The pop star's energy was quite observable throughout the interview, for she was continuously turning around and singing randomly. Although astrology is not a perfect science, the fact Celine showed plenty of energy and claimed to be a nervous person can contribute largely to her slim figure. According to a 2019 study published in Cell Metabolism, research now indicates that there exists a connection between higher metabolism and anxiety.

She claims that poor health plays no role in her current weight loss. According to ABC News, Celine talked about her weight loss back in 2019, stating, "It's true that I'm a little thinner. Nothing's wrong."

With an interview with Rolling Stone, because of "severe and persistent muscle spasms," Celine was forced to cancel part of her tour in North America that was planned to start in March 2022.

What has Celine been doing recently?

She has adopted ballet.

According to a 2019 People article, Celine's weight loss after her husband's demise might be because she has adopted ballet since then. Besides the responsibilities as a pop star and single mother, Celine has started practicing ballet during her free time.

She even explained, "Dancing has been in my DNA all of my life." But, the Canadian singer became 53 in 2021. Moreover, she described ballet as "so hard!" In spite of this, she was routinely practicing ballet 4X weekly in 2019. Celine informed People, "People say, 'She's a lot thinner but I'm working hard. I like to move and weight loss comes with it."

She doesn't care whether people approve or disapprove her current weight.

Celine has traveled a long inner journey since her husband's demise. She not only has adopted ballet and triumphed as a single mom but she also has taken up two new roles as a fashion icon as well as a spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris. She wants to motivate others to be confident, elaborating, "You cannot limit yourself. My life started over at 50. I feel happy, I feel beautiful. I thought, 'I must have done something right for this to be happening.'"

She shot back to critical remarks on her weight and choices in a bolder style over the years in The Sun 2019 article, saying, "If I like it, I don't want to talk about it. Don't bother. Don't take a picture," adding, "If you like it, I'll be there. If you don't, leave me alone." In conclusion: Celine doesn't care what anyone thinks about her figure or her daring style choices.

Grand total fiber consumption should be about 25 to 30 grams every day.

Remove trans fats from your daily diet as well as reduce the consumption of saturated fats that has a strong connection with coronary heart disease.

  • bagels
  • processed meats
  • foods with additional sugar, butter, and oils

2.  Never skip breakfast

Not only do you miss out on important nutrients, but you also might find yourself snacking a lot more during the day since you feel hungry. So, instead of helping you, that breakfast that you skipped will haunt you later in the day, materializing in hunger pangs that could cause you to easily overeat and eat more than usual!

3.  Maintain a diet and weight tracking diary

Believe it or not, self-monitoring constitutes a huge part in successful weight loss. People could keep a traditional diary, an app, as well as a dedicated website for tracking each food item eaten daily. In addition, you can measure your progress by making weekly weight records.

5.  Remove liquid calories

Nowadays it's more than possible to unconsciously consume hundreds of calories daily just by sipping sugar-sweetened alcohol, tea, soda, or juice. These are called "empty calories" on account of giving you additional energy content but without providing nutritional benefits.

Know that these sizes are only approximations, but still could assist you regulate your food intake while the usual tools are unavailable.

Why is this important?  Because prolonging a meal for 15 or 20 minutes permits the body to process and even register the critical signals for satiety.

It's vital to concentrate on being completely satisfied after finishing a meal instead of full and the keep in mind that several low-fat foods may not really be a healthful option.

You could consider these questions in respect to each meal choice:

  • Is it a fair "value" for the overall calorie cost?
  • Will it offer satiety?
  • Are most of the ingredients healthful?
  • According to the label, how much sodium and fat does it have?

8.  Eliminate or adjust triggers

Several environmental and social cues may in fact encourage needless eating. For instance, while some individuals are more prone to overeat when watching a movie, others might have difficulty passing a plate of candy to a brother or friend without grabbing one.

These basic two steps could go far in preventing rapid, spontaneous, and mindless eating.

Planning the best food options prior to going to restaurants or social events can also help in making the process smoother.

10.  Look for social support

It's always far easier to stay motivated when there exists social support around you.

Accepting the genuine support of those closest to you plays a definite role in any successful weight loss.

While some people might want to invite family or friends to join them, others may prefer only sharing their progress on social media.

Additional options of support can include:
  • exercise partners or clubs
  • individual or group counseling
  • employee-assistance programs
  • a supportive social network

11.  Stay positive

Weight loss often is a painfully slow process, and any person might feel quickly discouraged if the extra pounds are not vanishing at a much faster, anticipated rate.

Look, some days could be tougher than others while following a certain diet or maintenance program. A worthy program requires the person to continue and not resign if physical change does not occur in the first few days.

Some individuals may need to modify their objectives, like readjusting the maximum number of calories that they want to end up eating.

The critical thing to take away is to maintain a positive attitude and remain persistent in trying to push through all the obstacles to achieve your weight loss goal.

Weight Loss Pills -- Which Ones Work Best?

It's only part of being human to desire the fastest and easiest answer to a lurking problem. With medical-related issues, who wouldn't want a simple solution such as swallowing a pill to solve the issue? And several corporations prey on this desire by promoting new products in a number of forms from pills, powder, liquid or others with the guarantee of rapid weight loss.

Except it's not that simple nor fast. No pill, powder, or liquid alone will assist you lose weight overnight, regardless of how many pounds. Even FDA-approved medicines which a doctor can prescribe for treating obesity, are just one way for combating general weight loss.

OTC Supplements

Dietary supplements, which make the brazen claims to fix everything from increasing energy, supporting better functioning memory to burning fat fast, are not medications, according to physicians at the Mayo Clinic. They are scarcely--generally never--studied thoroughly, nor observed closely for safety or quality by the FDA. Mayo Clinic adds: "They aren't meant to treat or cure disease."

For instance, look at raspberry ketone: Although promoted as a clinically proven support for losing weight, that claim has only one measly little, short-term research trial comprising 70 adults suffering from obesity. While some participants were assigned at random to start taking a supplement that contains ingredients such as raspberry ketone, ginger, garlic root extract, bitter orange, and caffeine, others received a placebo. The group taking the supplement lost a little more weight--around 4 pounds as opposed to 1 pound during the 8-week period--but who could determine which particular ingredient was truly responsible for the resulting difference, or if the weight loss will continue and without side effects, if taken long term.

There are several other supplements that make similar claims such as African mango, garcinia cambogia, and green coffee bean extract. "In general these dietary supplements have little supportive evidence suggesting they are effective as a treatment for obesity," explains Dr. W. Scott Butsch, director of obesity medicine.

They can in addition be dangerous. Some dietary supplements have been connected to harmful health issues like liver damage, according to the Mayo Clinic. Moreover, in 2004, the FDA banned a weight loss product promoted as Ephedra, when it was connected to seizures, irregular heart rate, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks.

Approved Medications

Medicines approved by the FDA to treat weight loss for short term use include drugs such as Xenical, Qsymia, Contrave, and Saxenda. But be careful, for these do cause side effects. Contrave, for example, can cause nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness, headache disorder, hypertension, symptoms of anxiety, and much more.
